Dr. Karen C. Dwire has a rich background encompassing geriatric rehabilitation, neurorehabilitation, and working with military communities. With her journey beginning in Western Colorado and spanning across seven states and Italy, Karen brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of varied patient needs to Knospe-Lerncenter.
After earning her bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from Colorado State University in 2002, Karen embarked on a dynamic 20-year-and-continuing career. Her expertise evolved from geriatric rehabilitation and dementia care to specializing in neurorehabilitation for stroke and brain injury survivors. Karen’s versatility extends across pediatrics, inpatient and outpatient settings, rehab centers, and the Veterans Affairs (VA) system.
Karen’s notable international experience includes her role as the mTBI Occupational Therapist in Vicenza, Italy. Upon returning to the U.S. in 2018, she joined the VA in California, focusing on home-based primary care. Simultaneously, she pursued her post-professional clinical doctorate in Occupational Therapy. Though the pandemic altered her path, Karen adapted by embracing telehealth, working with school-aged children, and discovering a newfound passion for this demographic.
Her personal journey, marked by overcoming Leukemia and a severe car accident, imbues Karen with a unique empathy and connection to her clients, whether they are children with specific needs or military personnel living with pain and PTSD. Outside of her professional endeavors, Karen’s adventurous spirit shines through in her travel agency for individuals with diverse abilities and in the companionship of her service dog, Oscar the Ungrouch.
